What is APWU Health Plan?

The APWU Health Plan is a federal health benefits plan available to U.S. Postal Service employees, career bargaining unit members, federal employees, and annuitants through the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) Program and the Postal Service Health Benefits (PSHB) Program. Members can choose between two plan options: the High Option and the Consumer Driven Health Plan (CDHP).

The High Option provides a wide range of comprehensive benefits including mental health and substance use disorder treatment, and allows members to use any provider they choose, in or out of network. That flexibility is what makes traveling for residential treatment at Maple Mountain possible, even for members located outside of Utah.

Behavioral health benefits under the High Option are administered through UnitedHealthcare Behavioral Health Solutions, giving members access to a nationwide network of behavioral health providers.

These compulsions are driven by the need to reduce the anxiety caused by the obsessions, but the relief is typically short-term, and the cycle of obsessions and compulsions continues, often interfering with daily life and causing significant distress. OCD can affect individuals of any age and varies widely in severity and symptoms.

Residential Treatment Covered by APWU Health Plan

APWU Health Plan covers a full spectrum of mental health and substance use disorder treatment services. Covered services include residential treatment center care for both mental health and substance use disorders, as well as detox, inpatient care, partial hospitalization, outpatient programs, and medication management.

Under the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, APWU Health Plan is required to cover behavioral health treatment — including residential care — on terms comparable to medical and surgical benefits. This means residential mental health and addiction treatment is a covered benefit under most APWU plans, subject to your specific deductible, coinsurance, and prior authorization requirements.

Preauthorization is required for all inpatient and residential treatment center admissions. Failure to obtain prior authorization results in a minimum $500 penalty. Our admissions team at Maple Mountain handles this process on your behalf, coordinating directly with providers to confirm coverage and minimize delays before your arrival.

Depending on your specific plan, your APWU benefits may cover:

Coverage levels, deductibles, and out-of-pocket costs vary by plan. Our team will walk you through the exact numbers before you commit to anything.

Understanding Your APWU Plan

The amount you pay before your plan begins sharing costs. For the High Option, the calendar year deductible is $450 per person. If you’ve already met your deductible for the year, coverage may begin immediately.

Your share of costs after the deductible is met. High Option members pay 15% of the plan allowance for outpatient treatment, diagnostics, and inpatient services.

APWU requires prior approval for residential treatment admissions. Our admissions team initiates and manages this process entirely on your behalf.

Out-Of-Pocket Minimum

Once you reach this threshold, the plan covers 100% of covered services for the remainder of the year.

Out-Of-Network Benefits

APWU Health Plan covers most out-of-network services, though cost-sharing levels differ from in-network care.
