At Maple Mountain Mental Health & Wellness we offer a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)—an intensive, structured mental health treatment program providing daily therapy (5-6 hours/day) while allowing patients to return home. It bridges inpatient residential care and our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).
A PHP is a transitional stage of outpatient mental health or substance use treatment. While it includes individual, group and family therapy during the day, patients return home in the evenings.
PHP is intended to help patients stabilize while gradually transitioning to normal daily life.
Intensive support for those who don’t require residential treatment but who need more support than intensive outpatient care.
While it varies with the program, typically there are 5-6 hours of therapy daily, 5 to 7 days per week
Combines a structured mix of individual, group, and family therapy, medical care, and skill-building sessions.

PHP is generally a step-down from inpatient residential care or a step-up from standard outpatient therapy.
Two individual therapy sessions are included weekly with PHP, as compared to three for inpatient and one for IOP.

PHP offers a transition between residential treatment and traditional outpatient therapy. It provides intensive care mixed with some independence. Features of PHP include the following:
Daily therapy sessions (individual, group, family) and medical supervision.
In the evenings at home, patients practice coping skills.
PHP prepares the transition to a less intensive level of care by stabilizing symptoms.
While more intensive than standard therapy, PHP is less expensive than residential treatment.
PHP facilitates clients to maintain work, school, or family commitments in the evenings.
PHP is effective for crisis stabilization, anxiety, severe depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and preventing hospitalization.
PHP can be very effective as part of the recovery from substance abuse. Combining the structure of residential treatment with the flexibility to integrate into daily life, PHP prepares an individual for long-term sobriety. PHP includes these elements:
There are many benefits of a PHP. Here are some of the most important:
PHP offers social or community support in various ways. These strengthen the ability to heal and grow, beyond individual therapy work.
Develops connections with others who are in recovery, reducing the isolation of those struggling with mental health or addiction issues.
Offer accountability, encouragement, and hope from others with similar challenges. In addition, these help build a sober support network for those in recovery.
Helps repair relationships that have been impacted by mental illness or addictions.
Developing stronger relationships with a community of peers and the community at large, provides many social and personal benefits for maintaining sobriety goals, and strengthening self esteem and social skills.
Recovery requires connection, not isolation. So community support is key. Our PHP integrates peer support, group therapy, and family involvement. This helps reduce the risk of relapse by providing accountability, breaking the stigma of recovery challenges, and building a sober network for lasting success.
Patients are helped to maintain sobriety by participating in 12-step programs (e.g. AA, NA) or alternative peer groups (e.g. SMART Recovery, Refuge Recovery) by mentoring with peers and sharing experiences.
PHP is a structured mental health or substance use treatment program. It is a transition between 24/7 residential and intensive outpatient levels of care. PHP provides intensive care during the day, while enabling clients to return home in the evening and practice sobriety skills.
It is ideal for those who need more support than outpatient therapy but don’t require residential care. People with moderate to severe mental health conditions, substance use issues or those transitioning from residential care, are ideal candidates for PHP.
PHPs usually include a mix of:
