Suicidal ideation refers to thoughts, fantasies, or an active plan to die or commit suicide. It is not an official mental health diagnosis, but rather a symptom of a range of mental health challenges. According to suicide intervention specialists, most people who struggle with suicidal ideation don’t want to die as much as they want the pain of living to end, which can be caused by several psychological struggles, often invisible to others.
In clinical settings, medical professionals conduct a detailed assessment to understand the threat level and refer to someone’s suicidal ideation as passive or active.
| Passive Suicidal Ideation | Active Suicidal Ideation |
|---|---|
| Ongoing thoughts about death, dying, suicide, not necessarily with a plan to intend or act | Making a plan, active threats, or preparations to commit suicide |
| Ex: “I wish I wouldn’t wake up tomorrow and would die instead.” | Ex: “I am going to kill myself tonight, and I have a plan to do so.” |
| Lower risk that may not require immediate hospitalization, but can benefit from outpatient treatment to prevent escalation | High-risk and dangerous, often requires immediate hospitalization or inpatient residential treatment |
There are several factors that can increase the risk of suicide and are considered during a clinical assessment for suicidal ideation and self-harm. According to the CDC, the official list of risk factors for suicide includes:
We offer several evidence-based, clinically supported mental health therapies to address suicidal ideation and self-harm.
Individual therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) address negative core beliefs about oneself or others that contribute to distress. These help patients build skills to regulate emotions and practice impulse control to reduce self-harm behaviors and suicidal thinking.
Group therapy offers a source of emotional support and can reduce isolation in those struggling with suicidal ideation and self-harm. In a group therapy setting, patients can form connections with others who face similar struggles. They will also improve their coping skills under the guidance of a licensed therapist who leads each group.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) are both trauma-informed therapies to help patients quickly process and integrate traumatic memories that drive suicidal thoughts and self-harm. These are effective in reducing emotional distress and trauma-related suicidal thinking and behaviors.
Family therapy is effective in reducing suicidal ideation by improving family dynamics in the home and skills such as communication, trust, and emotional boundaries. Strengthening family relationships and problem-solving in the home creates a strong foundation to protect against mental health crises and suicidal thoughts.
Alongside therapy, we offer supplemental holistic healing approaches using a functional medicine approach to address the underlying causes of mental health challenges and support comprehensive healing from suicidal ideation and self-harm.
Functional medicine and genetic testing offer promising approaches to treating suicidal ideation and self-harm by addressing the biological and genetic factors that contribute to mental health vulnerabilities. These aim to identify and address underlying physiological imbalances, such as inflammation, nutrient deficiencies, and hormonal disruptions, that affect brain health.
Nutritional psychiatry focuses on helping patients build a well-balanced diet that supports brain function, mood regulation, and emotional resilience. Recreational therapies like yoga, equine horse therapy, and hiking are restorative activities to reduce stress, improve mood, increase body awareness, and build social connections.
Creative arts and expressive therapies, such as art, music, and dance, offer powerful healing pathways for those struggling with suicidal ideation and self-harm by providing nonverbal ways to process and express emotions. These can reduce mental pain, build self-compassion, and promote emotional regulation by engaging the senses and fostering self-awareness.

and treatments are designed to address trauma at its root, which often influences suicidal thoughts and self-harm behaviors.
such as accelerated resolution, EMDR, neurofeedback, and ketamine therapy offer new pathways for trauma breakthroughs and emotional healing.
components such as equine therapy, yoga nidra, art, and music therapy encourage emotional expression and opportunities to build connections with others in recovery.

I would give Maple Mountain health and wellness 10+ stars if I could! Going there was the best thing I have ever done for myself in my whole life. I highly recommend this facility for anyone dealing with trauma. The modalities of therapy offered were life-changing. I learned many new life skills, and have tools to bring home as I continue my healing and recovery journey. I felt like I was in a safe, beautiful home with the most loving, caring, and kind staff you could ever ask for. The best part is that I made lifelong friends that I will cherish forever. The entire program is incredibly well structured, the staff and therapists are very knowledgeable and kudos to the chefs, as the food was not only nutritious, but phenomenal! Aside from the educational groups that range from group processing, yoga Nidra, sound bath, nutrition and wellness, equine and music therapy (my personal favorites) DBT, CBT, and stress management were incredibly valuable, and I learned so much from these programs. Jen was the first person I spoke with, and I knew in our conversation that this was the right place for me. I was warmly welcomed right from the beginning, and knew this journey would be healing and memorable. We also were able to have a lot of fun with the experiential activities they carefully planned for us. Special kudos to Vikki, who went out of her way to give me the care and tools for me to maintain my recovery. I am forever grateful to every single person at Maple Mountain recovery. I researched the entire country for two weeks to find this place, and it was worth that time because they deserve every rave review they get! Super highly recommended and feel free to reach out if you have any questions! Thank you so much to everyone at MMR! I will never forget you and love you all💜
Maple Mountain Recovery in Utah completely exceeded my expectations. From day one, their team created a highly personalized treatment plan tailored just for me—every session felt tailored to my needs. What really sets them apart is the way they seamlessly blend healing with genuine care and enjoyable experiences. Between therapy sessions, I had options like yoga, cold plunges in nature, art therapy, acupuncture, and many therapeutic adventures. It felt like real recovery, not just treatment. The staff is amazingly attentive—every single team member knew my name, remembered my goals, and checked in regularly to see how I was doing. They made sure I felt supported 100% of the time and built an environment that was both professional and warm. If you’re looking for a recovery center that cares deeply, customizes your journey, and injects a dose of fun and relaxation into the process—Maple Mountain Recovery is it. Highly recommend!.
The Staff are so friendly and helpful, I am able to work on a lot of the traumas and life events that have happened to me that have caused turmoil for many years. They also have helped me find a new way of viewing myself and how to move on with my life and find new chapters for me to write for myself. I am so thankful for Maple Mountain Recovery.
I’ve been to several treatment centers and this place is by far the best place I’ve ever been! The staff has been wonderful and attentive to all my needs. Maple Mountain Recovery has literally saved my life and I’m a better person today because of them! I have a lot of love and respect for this place and the people there!

Coming to a place like MMR can be stressful and scary, especially when already emotionally all over the place, but I will forever be grateful for finding this place. I don't have enough positive words to describe just how thankful I am. Every single person on the staff is so incredible that they easily helped me get through my anxiety about being in residential treatment. They are all so caring and compassionate that it was easier than I ever thought possible. The group and individual sessions were thorough and enlightening, too. I've also never had such delicious and healthy meals. I'm going to be disappointed in my own cooking now 🙃

My journey at MMR has been life changing. I honestly don’t know where to begin! This is my 5th treatment center in 2 years for alcoholism but this is the first place that has targeted the trauma linked to it. I’m so impressed with the differences in MMR from previous centers. The best way I can describe it is “family style treatment”. The staff becomes like family, it’s a tight community of folks who honestly care about your recovery. The therapists and case managers are out of this world amazing! Very rarely do you get to know your case manager on a personal level. Here, they become a major part of your recovery and help look at every aspect of your life and how they can help. I could go on and on about the incredible benefits of MMR but would just highly recommend giving it a try!
