Expert Brainspotting Therapy in Utah Designed for Deep Healing

At Maple Mountain Mental Health and Wellness, we combine brainspotting with a whole-person, functional medicine mindset to heal the root cause of mental health challenges.

What is Brainspotting Therapy?

Brainspotting is a type of alternative therapy, growing in popularity, primarily used to treat trauma. However, patients with depression, anxiety, and even chronic pain have found relief with brainspotting therapy. Drawing on the foundations of EMDR, brainspotting was created by EMDR therapist David Grand in 2003.

It focuses on various eye movements and positions that correlate with “spots” in the brain. These spots are thought to store trauma and emotional distress, evoking different emotional reactions or sensations. In some small clinical studies, brainspotting has been shown to improve PTSD symptoms among participants just after three sessions.

How Brainspotting Therapy Works at Maple Mountain

At Maple Mountain, we use brain-spotting as a supportive therapy in your overall treatment plan to help you recover from complex trauma, PTSD, substance abuse, and other mental health challenges. Sessions are guided under the care of a licensed and certified brainspotting therapist, who uses visual cues, noises, tapping, and vibrations to help you focus on spots in your visual field that hold traumatic memories.

During brain-spotting sessions, we help you tune into your bodily sensations and facilitate communication between the brain and the body. Therapists also help you identify spots in the visual field that promote feelings of relaxation or empowerment, known as resource spotting.

Conditions We Treat

Brainspotting for Trauma and PTSD

Brainspotting for Trauma and PTSD

Visual spots are linked to trauma “capsules” stored in the deep subcortical brain regions of the amygdala and midbrain. While holding the gaze on the spot, the trauma memory can be accessed safely for emotional release and nervous system reset.

Brainspotting for Depression

Brainspotting helps identify and release sources of depression, stress, and emotional pain, rather than just managing symptoms. It also promotes self-awareness by helping the patient gain new insights into their emotions, triggers, and behaviors.

Brainspotting for Anxiety

Targets the mind-body sensations of anxiety, such as a tight chest, shakiness, or racing thoughts, and helps identify related brain spots. The therapy can help patients become more aware of underlying emotional challenges or implicit memories that fuel anxious thought cycles.

Frequently Asked Questions About Brainspotting

Brainspotting therapy encourages patients to hold a gaze on various spots in the visual field, thought to hold trauma and emotional distress. Maintaining this gaze helps access deep emotional traumas and bodily sensations to support healing.

Brainspotting is considered safe with few side effects. Some patients report mood swings, irritability, or emotional distress following their session, but these usually subside within the day.

We accept most major insurance plans at Maple Mountain, and our dedicated admissions team is available to assist you in verifying benefits or finding a payment plan that suits your financial needs.

Brainspotting is not physically painful, although some individuals may experience tension or discomfort, particularly when processing traumatic or distressing memories. Our therapists are trained to help you manage any negative feelings that arise and help bring you back to a grounded, calm state of mind when finishing the session.

It typically takes 3 to 10 sessions to see an improvement in symptoms. However, some patients report improved benefits in as little as 1 to 3 sessions.
