The Functional Medicine Approach

Functional medicine also known as integrative medicine is a holistic form of medicine that is focused on finding underlying root issues driving symptoms of mental health distress. Many refer to functional medicine as the combination of western and eastern modalities. Functional medicine utilizes alternative treatments that address the body’s functionality as a whole which is why we have adapted the approach into our program at Maple Mountain Mental Health & Wellness as we strive to be a truly holistic residential wellness center.

The Maple Mountain Standard

We believe all patients should have the opportunity to experience the effects of proper nutrition and gut health emphasized in the functional medicine approach. In efforts to offer the holistic experience to all, we provide oral supplements and amino acids to all patients who come through our residential program at no additional charge.

Functional Medicine Testing

Functional medicine testing is searching for underlying causes contributing to root issues. We are looking for mold toxicity, neurotoxins, heavy metals, imbalanced hormone levels, thyroid performance, overall gut health, food sensitivity, etc. These can contribute to mental health symptoms like brain fog, lethargy, anxiety, depression, addictions, OCD behaviors, and mania disorders.

Organic Acid Test (OATs)

A urine test to evaluate candida, mold toxicity, Catecholamine (dopamine, epinephrine, tryptophan, etc.), ketones, and fatty acids. This test gives information on gut health, neurotransmitter health, and potential environmental toxins that are causing mental health issues.

Food Sensitivity Testing

Scans for food sensitivities, inflammation, and gut permeability. Symptoms related to IgG reactions can often be manifested as chronic issues like joint ache, IBS, depression, or anxiety.

Hormone Testing

Assesses for a proper balance of hormones such as estrogen, testosterone, cortisol, thyroxine, leptin, etc. Imbalanced hormones can affect energy levels, mental focus, stress and anxiety levels, weight gain/loss, hair loss, muscle weakness and muscle aches.

Neurotoxin Testing

A behavioral assessment can help determine signs of neurotransmitter depletion. Assesses for symptoms of physiology, personality, character and memory caused by deficiency of Serotonin, Dopamine, Epinephrine, Norepinephrine, and Gaba.

Myers Cocktail IV Therapy

An infusion of multiple vitamins and minerals, including B vitamins, vitamin C, calcium, and magnesium. It works by increasing the blood concentration of these essential vitamins and minerals beyond what can be achieved when supplementing orally. These nutrients are quickly introduced into the cells and get utilized by the mitochondria increasing energy levels and making the cells more efficient with their functions.

Amino Acid IV Therapy

Amino acid formulations work by supplying a very high level of amino acids specifically formulated to provide raw materials that can support normal nerve tissue healing to safely and significantly improve the symptoms of drug dependence, tolerance, and cravings. Without healthy neurotransmitter receptors, the body does not adequately produce normal or optimal transmission of chemicals from cell to cell. This is an 8 hour IV infusion with an average of ten infusions.

NAD+ IV Therapy

Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide. This chemical is produced naturally in the body but our bodies produce less with age or stress. It is an enzyme found in every cell of the body that is involved with hundreds of bodily functions from cellular energy to mitochondria health. Receiving NAD+ through IV will aid in cell recovery that was damaged by stress, inflammation, toxins, poor nutrients, and free radicals. It has been proven to detox and cleanse, improve mental clarity, boost overall energy, and provide immune system support. NAD+ is the only nutrient able to cross the blood brain barrier to heal vital neurotransmitters found in the brain. This can be added to an amino acid IV or Myers Cocktail.

Ketamine Psychotherapy

Apart from its use as an anesthetic agent, ketamine has shown to be an effective treatment for patients with depression, poor mood, anhedonia, and suicidal thoughts. A micro dose can have effects of antidepressants that can be seen within hours of administration and last for about a week. Our clinical and medical team will determine if this could be an effective approach as it is not meant for everyone.
